President Trump ordered by judge to keep quiet in court
Former president's lawyer argues order is an attack on First Amendment rights
Donald Trump was ordered by a judge to keep quiet in court on Wednesday after the former president's lawyer argued that an order barring him from speaking about the case was an attack on his First Amendment rights.
The order came in response to a lawsuit filed by Trump's niece, Mary Trump, who is accusing him of defrauding her out of millions of dollars.
In a hearing on Wednesday, Trump's lawyer, Alina Habba, argued that the order was a "prior restraint" on Trump's First Amendment rights and that it was unconstitutional.
However, the judge ruled that the order was necessary to prevent Trump from interfering with the case and that it was not a prior restraint because it did not prevent Trump from speaking about the case outside of court.
The order is the latest in a series of legal setbacks for Trump, who is also facing a criminal investigation by the Fulton County District Attorney in Georgia and a civil investigation by the New York Attorney General.
